Organist (PT), St. Mary of the Assumption Parish, Brookline, MA
St. Mary of the Assumption Parish (Roman Catholic) in Brookline Village/Chestnut Hill is seeking a skilled organist to join our music ministry to play 4 liturgies per weekend, funerals, weddings, Holy days, and other liturgies beginning in June. The organist will work under the direction of the Music Director.
The regular schedule of Masses requiring organ music is: Saturdays 4:00 pm (St. Mary); Sundays 9:00 am (St. Lawrence); 11:00 am (St. Mary) and 5:30 pm (St. Mary) Funerals Masses are typically celebrated Mondays through Saturdays at 10:00 or 11:00 am. While both churches have active choirs/scholas, there are currently no regular weeknight rehearsals.
The ideal candidate will:
have an understanding of, and commitment to the role that music plays in the Catholic liturgy and in supporting worship and faith formation
possess excellent keyboard, pedal, and registration skills and superior sight-reading ability
be a strong leader for congregational singing while also being a sensitive accompanist for soloists
be able to extend, cut, or add music to accommodate the flow of the Mass in real time, and anticipate the need to do so
be a flexible and accommodating colleague, and be willing to take direction from the Music Director and Priests and to work with both professional musicians and members of the community
be responsible for selecting appropriate prelude and postlude music, and for gathering all keyboard music needed for liturgies, using provided resources and lists
St. Mary of the Assumption Parish consists of two churches: St. Mary’s in Brookline Village, which has a 3-manual/34 rank organ, originally made by Simmons in the 19th century. A new console was installed and a partial restoration was undertaken in 2011 by Foley-Baker, Inc. St. Mary’s also has a 6’ Boston Grand piano. St. Lawrence church in Chestnut Hill has a 3-manual Allen digital organ. The piano and organs may be used for practice and for teaching during the week, as the church’s schedule allows.
Compensation will be on a per Mass basis, and is competitive.
